Spyware

For several years my wife and I have run AdAware© by Lavasoft (a free download) on our computers every few days. As we're surfing the web various web sites put little spyware programs in your computer that report back on your web surfing habits. After a while these can become so plentiful they compete with you for Internet time, slowing your computer down. A couple of years ago we visited our daughter in Indiana and found her computer was almost unusable in trying to access anything on the Internet. I downloaded AdAware© and ran it on her computer. It found 1,868 spyware programs all running in the background. When we deleted these her computer picked right back up to it's normal speed. Now they run this program every few days on their computers. Just thought I'd pass this piece of information on in case anyone out there is having spyware slowdown problems.

Fish, one other piece of freeware you can run along with AdAware is Spybot. It will find the ones that AdAware misses. I've used both along with CCleaner to keep our PCs healthy.

There is another as well know. Grisoft.com, who makes the free AVG virus software, also has a free spyware package. If you run a PC, any of these apps is almost a necessity if it's connected.

I've got several of those that run daily, and then a once a week scan as well.

It's like spiders in the mailbox.

When my computer started bogging down a month ago - we got Spyware Doctor and I had over 200 programs on it. I thought for sure that was the problem - but even after getting rid of the programs, my computer was still too slow.

Oh well - after re-installing EVERYTHING, I'm back up and running!

I may tell my hubby about this one - I think its good to have 2 spyware removers. A kind of back-up system, right?

Hey - I can't leave comments much longer because you don't accept anonymous - and I'm no longer Blogger.

Yes, you probably are preaching to the choir, Fish, but we don't mind! Thanks for trying to help, though. :)

Yep, you're preaching to the choir but I learned something new. I did not know they could slow down your puter.
