The Studebaker Avanti was a beautiful car. What became of Studebaker? Then there was Nash and Hudson that combined as American Mortors Corporation. All gone. Bankrupt. Out of business. That's been the history of automobile manufacturers in the United States. Once upon a time there were hundreds of such manufacturers. Stutz, Haynes, Hupmobile, Duezenberg, Locomobile, Crosley, Kaiser, Essex and hundreds more.

The government didn't saddle the taxpayers with huge debt to bail out any of these companies, so why do they feel it's the taxpayers responsibility to bail out the big three? Let them declare bankruptcy, reorganize, get rid of some of the excess baggage they've carried around since they had world dominion in the fifties. When the dust settles there may only be a Big One left standing, but that's the nature of the free enterprise system. We can do without an ever increasing socialism in this country.

That's my take on it also, Fish. No bailouts.

Here's a interesting piece (not too long) on how GM could help dig themselves out of the hole. American Spectator

Studebaker did NOT file for bankruptch in the sixties...
They did change their pension program to include only employees that had 10+ years of service (which excluded thousands of union employees that had less than 10 years of service... Look up the ERISA act to see how Democrat lawmakers responded to that)...
Studebaker then diversified it's holdings by buying several non auto manufacturing companies (Onan, Gravely, STP, Paxton, Worthington Leasing, TWA, and others)...
Several of those companies survive today under different ownership)..
Studebaker then CHOSE to cease auto production in South Bend in 1964 and closed their Hamilton Ontario plant in 1966. The old Studebaker Jefferson Street plant was sold to AM General, who built the Hummer.
So... 45 years later, maybe Studebaker did have the right idea...

Good piece AGT, but I doubt they'll take any of this advice.

Anon, I know they didn't file for bankruptcy, just that the auto manufacturing side of the company was bankrupt. ERISA is one more law we would be better off without.

Half the wagons on the Oregon Trail were Studebaker-built. Old company. When I was in HS, an old farmer out of town aways used his
1950 Hudson straight six for pulling hay wagons out to the herd, figuring it was hardier than his IH Farmall, I guess. At some point, someone is going to figure out if we have no heavy industry like automobile, we will have to import military trucks/tanks. All the auto mfg places made them in
WWII. (Ford also made B-24 Liberators, GM turned out Navy Wildcats and Avenger torpedo bomobers) IMO, without basic industry, we will sink from world leadership.

I loved the Studebaker, Fish.

I agree with your take on the Big Three bailout. But what does it matter... they'll end up doing it. We know they will.

Idaho, you're right, we need heavy industry and I'm sure we will always have it. It just needs to be revamped into an effecient corporation or two or three. The way it is now it's a big, lumbering, obsolete dinosaur.

Gayle, I'm afraid you're right, but I see the Democrat controlled Congress is trying to get the Bush administration to be the fall guy for bailing them out, even though it's really the choice of Congress. It's a hot potato they want to toss to the Republicans.

Makes me nostalgic. I started with '51 ford coupe in college and have been through many cars of all sorts. But the best I had, or ever will have was the 1966 Olds
Toronado *sigh*

I loved the Studebaker, Fish. There's a beautiful one in prime shape in town here. I'm tempted, but I have my priorities, and classic cars aren't one of them.

I also believe the bailouts are a stupid endeavor and that's putting it mildly.

Sorry about not being around for so long. I've been busy.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and yours. :)
